Comfort without an afterlife

Author’s Note:

I wrote this a few years ago while I was still in the military. I’m out now, and have been out for several years, but I am still proud of this piece. I served fourteen years in the United States Army, and was an out and open atheist the entire time. I was an atheist before they even had a religious classification for non-believer (they gave me dog tags that said “christian non-denominational” because that was the closest thing their automated system had for years. I went out and had custom ones made that said atheist until there was an option later).

Anyway, I’m re-posting this here for any who might be interested.
